China's first self-developed mask, capable of filtering out 99.99% of PM2.5 particles, is set to make its debut at the Chongqing International Investment and Global Sourcing Fair. Each unit will be priced around RMB 20, according to reports from the ceremony marking the establishment of the Water Treatment Engineering Technology Center at the Chongqing Institute of Green Intelligent Technology, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The breakthrough comes from the Institute of Membrane Technology and Application Engineering, which has developed an advanced air purification filter material. This material can effectively block ultra-fine particles as small as 0.33 microns. Ren Wei, deputy director of the center, stated that the rejection rate for such particles reaches an impressive 99.99%, with the technology currently leading in China.
With smog and urban pollution increasingly affecting public health, many people now rely on masks to protect themselves from harmful particulate matter. However, Ren Yiwei pointed out that most cotton masks on the market struggle to filter particles smaller than 2.5 microns. Even medical masks only manage to block 5% to 10% of these fine particles. The latest PM2.5 masks available today can only filter between 50% and 60% of the harmful particles.
According to Ren Wei, the key innovation lies in the membrane material used in the mask. Made from ultra-fine fibers, each fiber measures just a few tens of nanometers—about one-thousandth the width of a human hair. In contrast, traditional materials have fibers that are tens to hundreds of micrometers in size. This unique structure ensures that the mask is not only highly effective but also comfortable and non-irritating to wear, making it a practical solution for daily use in polluted environments.
