China's first self-developed mask, capable of filtering out 99.99% of PM2.5 particles, is set to make its debut at the Chongqing International Investment and Global Sourcing Fair. Each mask is expected to cost around RMB 20. This announcement was made during the ceremony for the establishment of the Water Treatment Engineering Technology Center at the Chongqing Institute of Green Intelligent Technology, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The mask was developed by the Institute of Membrane Technology and Application Engineering, which has created an advanced air purification filter material. This material can effectively block ultra-fine particles as small as 0.33 microns. Ren Wei, deputy director of the center, emphasized that the material’s rejection rate for such particles reaches up to 99.99%, placing the technology among the most advanced in China.
With increasing urban pollution and frequent smog events, more people are turning to masks to protect themselves from harmful particulate matter. However, according to Ren Yiwei, most cotton masks on the market struggle to block particles smaller than 2.5 microns, while medical masks only manage to filter between 5% and 10% of these fine particles. Even the latest PM2.5 masks available today can only block about 50% to 60%.
The new mask uses a membrane material composed of ultra-fine fibers, measuring just a few tens of nanometers—roughly one-thousandth the width of a human hair. In comparison, traditional materials have fibers that are tens to hundreds of micrometers thick. "This makes the mask not only highly effective but also comfortable to wear without causing irritation," said Ren Wei. The innovation represents a significant step forward in personal protective equipment, offering a safer and more efficient solution for daily use in polluted environments.
