Now, in our ongoing construction project, we've introduced a concrete pump into the work. Although these pumps are not cheap, they are prone to wear and tear over time. Today, Intel Machinery shares some practical tips on how to extend the service life of a concrete pump.
First, when connecting the transfer pipes, it's essential to start from the pump outlet and proceed sequentially from front to back. Avoid connecting the first two sections first and then the middle, as this can create internal stress between the pipes, leading to joint failure or pipe breakage. Once connected, make sure to secure the pump’s outlet, bend pipes, and straight sections firmly to prevent movement that could damage the pipeline.
The pressure inside the pipe is highest near the pump, so it's wise to use thicker-walled pipes close to the pump and thinner ones farther away. This strategy helps prolong the pipeline's lifespan and reduces the risk of blockages or bursts. For the elbows, which experience the most wear, regularly rotating them can help even out the wear and extend their service life.
Next, the cutting ring and the wear plate (or "glasses plate") require careful maintenance. These components move relative to each other and are coated with wear-resistant materials. The gap between them should be adjusted to 0.1–0.2 mm using the S-shaped tube spline nut. A rubber spring between the S-tube and the cutting ring allows for flexibility. Over time, the rubber may lose elasticity, and the gap may increase. When it reaches 0.7 mm, the gap must be adjusted immediately to prevent mortar from entering the friction surface, which would accelerate wear.
The cutting ring typically wears first at its edges and at two symmetrical points 90° from the top. Rotating the cutting ring after wear occurs can effectively double its life. The wear plate usually shows the most damage in the center of the bridge area. As the gap increases, wear accelerates. Always monitor the gap and adjust or replace parts promptly. If the rubber spring loses elasticity, it should be replaced immediately.
For repair, D507 welding rods can be used to resurface worn parts like the cutting ring and wear plate.
When it comes to the discharge port, tapered pipe, and distribution valve—common wearing parts—any signs of wear should be addressed immediately by surfacing with D507 electrodes. The lifespan of these parts varies depending on site conditions, such as concrete quality, pumping distance, and height. However, proper usage and maintenance can significantly extend their life.
Lubrication of the piston and conveying cylinder is also crucial. Pistons are often made of polyurethane and are flexible but wear over time. The cylinder wall is also coated with wear-resistant material. There are two types of lubrication: automatic and manual. For automatic systems, check oil flow regularly; if blocked, it can cause severe wear. For manual systems, operators should refill lubricant based on working conditions, ensuring the piston is at the bottom during refueling to allow proper oil entry.
During pumping, operators may perform “holding cylinder†operations—pressing the jog button for 5–8 seconds once the piston reaches the end to fully fill the hydraulic reservoir. This helps avoid localized wear on the cylinder. Also, monitor the cooling water tank. If the water becomes cloudy or contains sand, it may indicate piston wear, requiring replacement. If new pistons cause quick turbidity, the cylinder may be worn and needs replacing.
To check cylinder wear, measure the diameter. If the inner diameter increases by 0.45–0.55 mm, the cylinder should be replaced. The cooling water temperature is also important—too high can accelerate piston wear, so regular water changes are necessary.
By following these steps, your concrete pump will last longer, perform better, and support your construction projects more efficiently. Intel Machinery’s concrete pumps are known for their quality and durability—take care of them, and they’ll serve you well for years.
