Bathroom decoration is often considered one of the most expensive parts of home renovation, even though it typically occupies a small space. Despite its size, there are numerous elements to consider: bathtubs (or shower or steam rooms), toilets, and sinks. Today, the market offers an overwhelming variety of bathroom products, with different styles, sizes, and materials that can be quite dazzling for buyers—especially when it comes to choosing a sink.
In the past, sinks were mainly divided into three types: above-counter, under-counter, and column-style basins. These were mostly similar in design, differing only slightly in color, size, and depth. However, modern options have evolved significantly. While the basic forms still exist, the shapes and materials have changed dramatically.
First, the materials used for sinks have diversified. Traditionally, ceramic was the standard, but now glass, metal, and synthetic materials are also commonly used. In recent years, colorful and transparent glass sinks have broken the traditional mold, bringing a fresh and modern feel to the bathroom industry. Compared to ceramic sinks, glass ones are easier to clean and offer a more elegant finish.
Second, the design has become more diverse. Previously, most sinks were round, but now there are many unique and personalized options—square, rectangular, hexagonal, fan-shaped, some resembling bowls, others like hats. These alternative designs add more visual interest to your personal space.
Of course, brand-name products are known for their quality, but they come at a high price. On the other hand, budget brands may offer better value, but their quality can be inconsistent, making it easy to end up with low-quality products. So, how do you choose wisely when buying from a general brand?
1. It's best to go for tempered glass basins and countertops. Tempered glass is heat-resistant (can withstand up to 100°C), impact-resistant, and safer if broken—it turns into small, rounded pieces instead of sharp shards. Compared to regular glass, it’s much safer and only costs about 60–100 yuan more.
2. Don’t assume that thicker glass means better durability. Some people believe that thicker glass is less likely to break, but in reality, thicker glass conducts heat more slowly. When hot water is poured in, the temperature difference between the inside and outside can cause cracks due to thermal expansion and contraction—like putting an ice cube in boiling water. The greater the temperature difference, the higher the risk of cracking. Therefore, 12mm thickness is usually sufficient for sinks, while countertops can be 12mm or 15mm without issues.
3. When selecting a glass sink, make sure the edges are smooth and rounded—products with rough or uneven edges can be unsafe. You can also check the quality by looking for bubbles in the glass. Inferior glass sinks often contain visible bubbles, which indicate poor craftsmanship.
