Wood panels can be broadly classified into two main categories: solid wood boards and engineered wood boards. While solid wood panels are still used for flooring and door frames, most of the panels commonly used today are manufactured through artificial processes. This makes them more affordable and versatile for a wide range of applications.
1. **Material Classification**
Wood panels can be divided into two major types: solid wood panels and engineered wood panels. Solid wood panels are made from natural timber, while engineered wood panels are manufactured using various techniques to enhance performance and reduce costs.
2. **Molding Classification**
Based on their manufacturing process, wood panels can be further categorized into solid boards, plywood, fiberboard, decorative panels, fireproof boards, and more. Each type has unique properties that make it suitable for different purposes.
**Types of Wood Panels**
1. **Solid Wood Boards**
As the name suggests, solid wood boards are made entirely from natural wood. They are durable, aesthetically pleasing, and offer a natural look, making them ideal for high-end interior design. However, due to their high cost and the complexity involved in installation, they are not widely used in everyday applications. These boards are usually categorized based on their wood species and are not standardized in size or thickness.
2. **Plywood**
Plywood, also known as veneer board, is made by layering thin sheets of wood veneer with adhesive. It is one of the most commonly used materials in handmade furniture due to its strength and flexibility. Plywood is typically available in different thicknesses, such as 3-ply, 5-ply, 9-ply, 12-ply, 15-ply, and 18-ply (with 1 ply equal to 1 mm).
3. **Decorative Panels**
Also known as surface panels, these are decorative sheets that have a single-sided finish. They are created by cutting thin layers of solid wood (about 0.2 mm thick) and bonding them to a core material like plywood. Decorative panels are often used in high-end interiors and are known for their elegant appearance.
4. **Blockboard**
Blockboard, or large-core board, is made by sandwiching a core of wood strips between two layers of veneer. It is more cost-effective than fine-core boards but has lower resistance to bending in the vertical direction. However, it performs better in lateral bending.
5. **Particleboard**
Made from wood scraps mixed with glue and pressed into sheets, particleboard is an economical option. It comes in two types: extruded and flat-pressed. Although it is inexpensive, it lacks structural strength and is not ideal for heavy-duty furniture.
6. **MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)**
MDF is made from wood fibers and synthetic resins, offering a smooth surface and ease of shaping. It is divided into high-density, medium-density, and low-density boards depending on its density. MDF is popular in furniture manufacturing abroad, but in China, quality standards are lower compared to international benchmarks.
7. **Fireproof Board**
This is a modern, eco-friendly material made from silicon or calcium-based compounds, along with fibers and additives. It is increasingly used for its fire-resistant properties, as well as for its durability and aesthetic appeal. However, it requires special adhesives during installation and tends to be more expensive than decorative panels.
