What is the difference between CCD and CMOS?

CCD - English abbreviation Charge Couple Device, Chinese name "charge coupled device."

CMOS - Abbreviation for English Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor, Chinese name is "complementary metal oxide semiconductor."

The CCD is the current mainstream imaging device and is mainly divided into:

(1) RGB primary color CCD: This is the most widely used CCD for digital cameras.

(2) CYGM complementary color CCD: Some of the earlier Nikon digital cameras used this complementary color CCD.

(3) RGBE four-color CCD: This is Sony's newly released CCD, which has one more E than RGB primary color CCD
(Emerale, Emerald) color.

(4) Super CCD: It is the patent technology of Sakamoto Fujitsu. The Chinese name is Super CCD. It evolved from CCD and has now been developed to the 4th generation.

CMOS: As a digital camera imaging device is not a long time, but the development is very rapid, there is a great fight against the CCD Chamber, the basic structure of the pixel arrangement and RGB primary color CCD and there is no essential difference. Canon is the main supporter of the CMOS camp.

The CCD technology is mature and the imaging quality is good. After all, it is the most widely used imaging element in the application, but it also has its disadvantages:

1) Large power consumption. The early digital cameras had the reputation of “electric tiger”. One of the main reasons came from CCD. Although low-power polysilicon screens and other low-power components are used to reduce the power of the camera to a certain extent, CCDs are still a large consumer of digital cameras. CCDs are always working at any time after the camera is turned on, which is meaningless. It consumes a lot of electricity.

2) The process is complicated and the cost is high. The complex structure of the CCD determines the complexity of its manufacturing process. As a result, CCDs have so far produced only a handful of electronics giants.

3) Pixel lifting is difficult. The first two shortcomings of the CCD also directly lead to this shortcoming. The CCD pixels are simply enhanced in two ways: First, the CCD area is increased by keeping the unit area of the photosensitive element constant, and more photosensitive elements are integrated on the large area CCD. . However, this method will lead to reduced CCD yield, higher manufacturing costs and greater power consumption. This is unrealistic in the civilian sector. Second, the unit area of the photosensitive element is reduced, and more integrated in the existing level of CCD area. Photosensitive element. However, this method reduces the unit photosensitive area of the photosensitive element, reduces the overall sensitivity and dynamic range of the CCD, and affects the image quality.

The development speed of CMOS has been quite good in recent years, and it has a lot to fight with CCD. Even the most advanced DSLR (single-lens reflex digital camera), such as Canon EOS 1Ds, are all adopted by high-end professional SLRs. CMOS imaging.

CMOS has two most prominent advantages over CCDs:

1) The price is low and the manufacturing process is simple. CMOS can be produced using common semiconductor production lines. Unlike CCDs, which require special production processes, manufacturing costs are much lower. Moreover, CMOS size and yield are not as many restrictions as CCD.

2) Low power consumption. Although the CMOS filter layout is not much different from the CCD, there is a great difference in the circuit structure of the light sensing unit. Every photosensitive element of CMOS has an independent charge/voltage conversion circuit that can independently output the photoelectrically converted electrical signal. This is much faster than collecting all the signals from the CCD and then amplifying the output. Moreover, the CMOS sensor only works when sensitized imaging, so it saves more power than CCD. However, CMOS also has disadvantages. If there are many imaging operations when using a digital camera, CMOS will generate heat due to changing currents during frequent start-ups, causing clutter and affecting the image quality.
