Taomu culture

Feicheng, located in the western part of Mount Taishan, is home to the world's largest peach garden, with a long history of peach cultivation spanning thousands of years. According to ancient legends, peach wood is believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and disasters. The tradition of using peach branches for protection dates back to early Chinese mythology, where it was said that the southeast-facing peach branches could drive away demons and misfortune. One of the earliest records comes from the "Source of the Tao," which describes how ancient people carved peach wood and placed it near their homes to protect against malevolent forces. During the Han Dynasty, carved peach prints were hung on doorways, known as "Taoyin," symbolizing protection and good fortune. The "Han Shu Zhizhong" mentions that during midsummer, when the yin energy is strong, peach wood was used to suppress fear and danger. In the Song Dynasty, peach wood was further associated with spiritual protection. It was common to hang two panels inscribed with the names of gods like Shen Yu and Yu Lei, believed to guard against evil. These practices evolved over time, leading to the development of the traditional Chinese New Year couplets written on red paper, which still carry the essence of the original peach wood symbolism. The legend of Taomu (peach wood) is deeply rooted in ancient myths. One tale tells of Houyi, the legendary archer who killed the ten suns with his bow. According to some versions, he was later defeated by a peach stick, and after his death, he became a guardian deity, standing under a peach tree to protect the realm of ghosts. Another myth involves Kuafu, the giant who chased the sun and died of thirst, transforming into a peach tree. This connection between peach trees and the pursuit of light may have contributed to the belief that peach wood can repel evil spirits. Feicheng’s peaches are not only famous for their size and fragrance but also for their cultural significance. Known as "Buddha Peaches" or "Fat Peaches," they have been cultivated for over a thousand years and were once a royal tribute. The region’s unique geography and climate contribute to the quality of its peaches, making them an essential part of local folklore and traditions. The practice of using peach wood to ward off evil has persisted through generations. In ancient times, people would carve peach swords or place peach wood talismans in their homes. These items were believed to possess supernatural powers, capable of driving away ghosts and protecting families from harm. Even today, many people in Feicheng continue to use peach wood in rituals and decorations, especially during festivals and important events. The concept of "Taomu" extends beyond mere superstition; it represents a deep cultural heritage that blends nature, mythology, and spirituality. Whether through carvings, symbols, or simple charms, the power of peach wood remains a cherished tradition in Chinese culture. Its enduring presence reflects the timeless human desire for protection, peace, and good fortune.
