In the first half of 2013, Japan's eight major machine tool manufacturers reported a total of 219.43 billion yen in orders, marking a year-on-year decline of 17.1%, according to the Japan Machine Tool Industry Association. These companies include Mori Seiki Co., Ltd., Otsuka (OKUMA), Makino Manufacturing Co., Osaka Machine OKK, Toshiba Machine, Tsugami Jettage, Toyota Machin, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
The data also reveals that domestic orders for the period amounted to 74.22 billion yen, down 21.1% compared to the same period the previous year. Meanwhile, overseas orders reached 145.21 billion yen, reflecting a 15.0% drop. Despite the overall decline, the share of external demand rose by 1.7 percentage points, reaching 66.2% of total orders.
Experts point to several factors contributing to the drop in orders. A slowdown in China’s economy, reduced demand for smartphones, and the need for flood recovery in Thailand were identified as key challenges. However, the improvement in global economic conditions and the depreciation of the yen helped offset some of the declines. As a result, total orders for the first half of 2013 increased by 1.6% compared to the second half of 2012 (July–December). Analysts expect a gradual recovery in the second half of 2013, with a slow but steady growth in orders anticipated.
