Hunan Anzhen High-tech Co., Ltd. has successfully implemented its independently developed CO isothermal conversion technology at the methanol-to-ammonia plant of Shanxi Yangmei Fengxi Fertilizer Linyi Branch. The system has been operating stably for over ten days, with test results fully meeting design specifications. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first industrial application of high-concentration CO conversion technology for coal-based syngas.
Traditionally, CO conversion relies on multi-stage adiabatic reaction systems, which are not well-suited for high-concentration CO environments. When CO concentration exceeds 65%, the shift reaction becomes intense and hard to control, leading to unstable temperatures. Moreover, traditional systems typically require 4–5 conversion furnaces, along with complex heat exchange equipment, resulting in long reaction times, high system resistance (up to 0.4–0.6 MPa), and increased operational complexity.
Liu Yalong, Deputy General Manager of Yangxi Fengxi Linyi Branch, highlighted the advantages of Hunan Anzhen’s CO isothermal conversion technology. First, it achieves a CO conversion rate exceeding 98%, improving raw material utilization and reducing production costs. Second, by utilizing the principle of isothermal transformation through water-phase heat removal, the reactor maintains a low and stable temperature, minimizing thermal fluctuations and extending catalyst life. Third, the system exhibits low running resistance—only 22–25 kPa—with efficient catalyst usage. Finally, the use of a suspended water-tube reactor enhances equipment safety and stability by mitigating thermal expansion issues.
According to Hunan Anzhen engineers, the technology was also successfully applied in Xinjiang Tianye’s calcium carbide furnace for high-concentration CO tail gas treatment last year. This marked a breakthrough, as no similar solutions had previously existed in this field. With just one isothermal shift furnace, CO levels were reduced to between 0.2% and 0.4%, demonstrating the system's efficiency and scalability.
As coal gasification technologies advance, the CO content in syngas has risen to approximately 70%. This trend opens up a promising market for high-concentration CO conversion technologies. Hunan Anzhen began developing its high-concentration CO isothermal conversion technology back in 2007, and obtained national invention patents in 2009, marking a strong foundation for future innovation and growth in this critical industry.
