Wall surface requirements when wallpaper is pasted

Wallpaper has become a popular choice in home decoration. Before applying wallpaper, it's important to properly prepare the walls. If the wall has been exposed for too long, especially in damp areas, it’s advisable to use a fungicide to prevent mold growth. In cases where the other side of the wallpaper is a bathroom, the interior wall must be treated with a waterproofing agent. Otherwise, prolonged moisture can cause the wallpaper adhesive to lose its effectiveness and lead to peeling or bubbling.

Before pasting the wallpaper, ensure the wall surface is clean, smooth, and free from cracks or irregularities. Any imperfections should be scraped away with a blade, then filled with putty and sanded once dry. For large areas, using old powder mixed with cooked rubber powder can help strengthen the wall surface. For smaller gaps, gypsum powder mixed with a small amount of oil makes an effective filler. It’s best to apply two coats of primer to protect the wall and prevent moisture damage. After each coat dries, gently sand the surface. Avoid over-applying glue, as this can make the wall too smooth and reduce adhesion, leading to wrinkles or seams when the wallpaper dries.

The main steps for applying wallpaper on a plasterboard surface include: cleaning, filling gaps, sanding, sealing joints, applying putty, sanding again, brushing the base glue, marking lines, applying the adhesive, pasting the wallpaper, aligning seams, pressing out air bubbles, cleaning excess glue, and trimming any excess.

Before pasting the wallpaper, proper wall preparation is essential. The wall should be smooth, dry, crack-free, and free from dust. For cement or brick walls that are already flat, you can apply a thin layer of paint after using putty to level the surface. On gypsum boards, where there are seams or joints, these should be filled first before applying a skim coat. A sealant or primer not only helps cure and protect the putty but also enhances the wall’s resistance to alkalinity, making it more suitable for wallpaper. If the wall was previously painted, it should be sanded before applying wallpaper, as the preparation process is similar to painting.

According to the National Standard for the Acceptance of Quality of Building Decoration Engineering (GB50210-2001), the base treatment before wallpapering must meet specific criteria. Old walls should be cleaned of loose materials and treated with an interface agent. New concrete or plaster walls should be coated with an alkali-resistant primer before applying putty. The base surface should be consistent in color, with moisture content not exceeding 8% for concrete or plaster, and 12% for wood. The wall should be flat, with verticality and corners meeting quality standards. A seal coat should be applied before pasting, and the putty should be firm, non-powdery, and free from peeling or cracking. Lastly, always consider the environmental impact of the wallpaper adhesive used.
