Today, wallpaper is widely used in home decoration. Before applying the wallpaper, it's important to prepare the walls properly. If the wall has been exposed for a long time, using a fungicide can help eliminate mold. Additionally, if the other side of the wallpaper is a bathroom, the interior walls must be treated with a waterproofing agent. Otherwise, moisture can build up over time, causing the adhesive to lose its effectiveness and leading to peeling or damage.
Before pasting the wallpaper, the wall surface needs to be smooth, clean, and free from cracks or irregularities. Any uneven areas should be scraped off with a blade, then filled with putty and sanded once dry. For large areas, old powder and cooked rubber powder are recommended to strengthen the wall surface. For smaller gaps, gypsum powder mixed with some oil can be used as a filler. It’s best to apply two coats of varnish to protect the wall and prevent moisture. After each coat, gently sand the surface. Avoid applying too much oil, as this can make the wall too smooth, which may cause the wallpaper to not adhere properly and shrink during drying, creating visible seams.
The main steps for applying wallpaper on a plasterboard surface include: cleaning the wall, filling gaps, sanding, sealing seams, applying joint compound, sanding again, brushing a primer, marking lines, applying adhesive, pasting the wallpaper, matching patterns, pressing out air bubbles, cleaning excess glue, and trimming any excess material.
Before pasting the wallpaper, proper wall preparation is essential. The wall must be smooth, dry, crack-free, solid, and free from dust. For cement or brick walls that are already flat, you can use putty to level the surface and then apply a thin coat of varnish before pasting the wallpaper. On gypsum boards, where seams and joints are common, these should be filled first before applying the putty.
Primer and sealer play an important role in preparing the wall. They help cure and protect the putty while also improving the wall’s resistance to alkalinity. These should be applied only after the putty is completely dry. The process of preparing the wall for wallpaper is similar to painting, so a painted wall can be converted into a wallpapered one, but it should be sanded first to ensure a good adhesion surface.
When applying wallpaper, the base treatment must meet the requirements outlined in the Chinese National Standard for the Acceptance of Quality of Building Decoration Engineering (GB50210-2001). This includes removing loose materials from old walls and applying an interface agent. New concrete or plaster walls should be coated with an alkali-resistant primer before applying putty. The base layer’s color should be uniform, and the moisture content should not exceed 8% for concrete or plaster, and 12% for wood. The wall should also be flat, straight, and have well-defined corners.
Before applying the wallpaper, a seal coat should be applied to the base layer. The putty must be firm, non-powdery, and free from peeling or cracking. Finally, don’t forget to consider the environmental impact of the wallpaper adhesive you choose. Opting for eco-friendly options can improve indoor air quality and ensure a safer living environment.
