The appearance of a trial-made all-solid lithium ion secondary battery

Hitachi Shipbuilding announced on February 18, 2016 that it has developed a solid-state lithium-ion secondary battery using a sulfide solid electrolyte. The current mainstream of lithium ion secondary batteries is a product in which the inside of the battery is filled with an electrolyte, and the electrolyte uses an organic material, and there are problems in terms of durability and safety. Therefore, Hitachi Shipbuilding used a self-developed manufacturing method to develop a lithium-ion secondary battery using a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid.
In order to maintain the ion conductivity between the particles of the solid electrolyte material, the all-solid-state lithium ion secondary battery must be charged and discharged under a mechanically pressurized state. This time, the battery developed with the self-developed thin layer film forming technology and pressure molding technology has improved the ion conductivity between the material particles, thus achieving the charge and discharge without mechanical pressurization.
The main body of the battery has a flat shape with a thickness of about 0.3 mm. The electrolyte is solid and does not have fluidity, so the battery can be multilayered. As a result, miniaturization can be achieved compared to the use of an electrolyte. In addition, the result of the charge/discharge cycle test conducted at room temperature shows that the capacity retention rate of 100 charge/discharge cycles has reached 98%, and the capacity retention rate of 400 charge/discharge cycles has reached 96%. According to reports, in the ordinary use case, the capacity retention rate of more than 90% can be ensured in about 7 years. The operating temperature range is -40 to +100°C.
Hitachi Zosen has trial-produced a thin-film battery with a size of 100mm x 100mm x 0.3mm (without external packaging) and is commissioning a number of companies such as the Honda Institute of Technology to conduct evaluations. In addition, the battery was also listed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration and Development Agency (JAXA) as an "innovative battery technology realization project" and participated in the application of private enterprise technology to the field of aerospace.
In the future, Hitachi Shipbuilding will build production equipment for the purpose of launching products. The goal is to start sample shipments in 2017. Imagine fields such as power supplies for stationary electric vehicles, medical equipment, stationary batteries, and power supplies for space and deep-sea equipment.
