2012 China's water treatment equipment market development

In recent years, China has seen a sharp rise in water pollution incidents, marking the beginning of a high-incidence period. These frequent accidents have increasingly raised public concern and anxiety. Faced with the unpredictable consequences of sudden water contamination, more and more consumers are turning to household water purification systems. This shift is moving away from simply buying and drinking water to producing safe water at home, ensuring better health and safety for families. The growing demand for water purification products has already triggered significant market activity, fueling rapid development in the domestic water treatment equipment industry. According to recent reports, the output of water purifiers in China has been increasing by 42% to 50% annually. By 2010, the industry's output value had reached 30 billion yuan, signaling a booming sector with strong growth potential. Water purifiers first emerged in the U.S. during the early 1980s and have since become widely adopted in developed countries like the U.S. and Europe, where their market penetration rate exceeds 75%. In these regions, the adoption rate continues to grow by 10% to 15% each year. In contrast, China’s market penetration remains below 1%, but it is expanding rapidly—by 30% to 50% annually. In major cities such as Beijing, the penetration rate is even higher, surpassing 100%. Today, over 3,000 companies are involved in water purifier production in China, with the number of manufacturers rising by 30% to 40% each year. In 2010 alone, more than 30 million units were produced, and the output increased by 42% to 50% the following year. Sales exceeded 300 billion yuan, with about one-third exported overseas. While the industry is still relatively small on a national scale, it is growing quickly and showing great promise as a dynamic and emerging sector. Another promising area within the water treatment industry is the reclaimed water equipment market. With water scarcity becoming an urgent issue, especially in northern China, wastewater recycling has become a critical solution. The government is actively promoting water conservation while also emphasizing the use of recycled water. More and more cities are implementing plans to reuse treated wastewater, contributing to sustainable water management. Under the upcoming "12th Five-Year Plan" for environmental protection, the goal is to increase the utilization rate of urban reclaimed water to over 20% by 2015—more than 10 percentage points higher than at the end of 2010. Plans are currently being prepared for the construction of new wastewater treatment and recycling facilities, with an estimated investment of 421 billion yuan. Of this, 34.4 billion yuan will be allocated specifically for wastewater recycling infrastructure, accounting for about 8% of the total. In developed countries, the usage of reclaimed water has already reached over 70%, meaning there is still vast room for growth in China, which is only just starting to tap into this market. However, the development of reclaimed water use faces challenges, primarily due to delays in building the necessary supporting infrastructure. Effective reuse requires a comprehensive system that includes wastewater collection, treatment, and distribution. These projects require substantial investment, but as the push for reclaimed water grows, so too will the demand for related infrastructure and technologies. Equipment such as recirculating water systems, ultrafiltration membranes, ozone generators, and chlorinators are expected to see increased market expansion. Technologies like membrane filtration, electrodialysis, and reverse osmosis will continue to develop and gain wider application in the coming years.
