2012 China's water treatment equipment market development

In recent years, China has seen a sharp rise in water pollution incidents, marking the beginning of a high-frequency period. These recurring environmental crises have increasingly raised public concern and anxiety. In response to the unpredictable risks posed by sudden water contamination, more households are turning to home water purification systems. This shift is moving people away from simply buying and drinking water toward producing their own safe water, ensuring better health through self-sufficiency. The growing demand for water purification products has already sparked a significant market expansion, fueling rapid development within the industry. According to reports, the output of water purifiers in China has been increasing at an annual rate of 42% to 50%. By 2010, the industry's output value had reached 30 billion yuan, reflecting strong growth and consumer interest. Water purification technology first emerged in the U.S. during the early 1980s and has since become widely adopted in developed countries like those in Europe and North America. There, the market penetration rate has exceeded 75%, with annual growth rates between 10% and 15%. In contrast, China’s market penetration remains below 1%, but it is growing rapidly—by as much as 30% to 50% annually. In major cities such as Beijing, the adoption rate has surpassed 100%, indicating a strong trend toward domestic water treatment solutions. Today, over 3,000 companies are involved in manufacturing water purifiers in China, with the number of manufacturers rising by 30% to 40% each year. In 2010 alone, more than 30 million units were produced, and output continued to grow by 42% to 50% in the following year. Sales exceeded 300 billion yuan, with approximately one-third of products exported overseas. Despite being a relatively small sector, the water purification industry is booming and is considered a promising sunrise industry. The market for reclaimed water treatment equipment also shows great potential. As water shortages become more severe, especially in northern regions, wastewater recycling has become a crucial strategy for addressing resource scarcity. With the government promoting both water conservation and the use of recycled water, more cities are implementing sustainable water reuse programs. Under the upcoming "12th Five-Year Plan" for environmental protection, the goal is to increase the utilization rate of urban reclaimed water to over 20% by 2015—more than 10 percentage points higher than in 2010. A related plan for wastewater treatment and recycling infrastructure is currently being prepared, with an estimated investment of 421 billion yuan. Of this, about 34.4 billion yuan will be allocated specifically for wastewater recycling facilities, accounting for 8% of the total. In developed countries, the proportion of reused water can exceed 70%, meaning there is still vast room for growth in China’s reclaimed water sector. However, the slow development of supporting infrastructure remains a key challenge in expanding reclaimed water usage. Effective reuse requires comprehensive systems for wastewater collection, treatment, and distribution, which involve substantial investment. As the push for reclaimed water continues, the market for related infrastructure, processing technologies, and equipment will see significant growth. The demand for systems like recirculating water units, ultrafiltration membranes, ozone generators, and chlorinators is expected to rise. Technologies such as membrane filtration, electrodialysis, and reverse osmosis will play an even greater role in the future.
