A groundbreaking project has recently started operating in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province — the first integrated photovoltaic and ground-source heat pump microgrid demonstration park in China. This innovative facility combines solar power, energy storage, and geothermal technology to create a self-sustaining energy system. The ground-source heat pump system is now operational, and photovoltaic panels are expected to be installed by the end of this year.
Located in the High-tech Development Zone of Shijiazhuang, the "Photovoltaic Energy Storage Ground Source Heat Pump Integrated Microgrid Demonstration Park" marks a significant step forward in sustainable urban development. With an investment exceeding 10 million yuan, the project was completed in 2013 and serves as a model for future green infrastructure.
Once fully operational, the park will generate electricity through rooftop solar panels, meeting daily office and lighting needs while storing surplus power for use during cloudy days or at night. For heating and cooling, the park integrates ground-source heat pump technology, utilizing geothermal energy to regulate indoor temperatures efficiently.
The project has an annual power generation capacity of around 330,000 kilowatt-hours. By using the ground-source heat pump system, it saves approximately 620,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. Additionally, the system helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 304 tons, sulfur dioxide by roughly 9.5 tons, and nitrogen dioxide by 0.18 tons annually. It also saves the equivalent of 104.6 tons of standard coal per year, significantly lowering the environmental footprint.
This pioneering initiative not only showcases China’s commitment to renewable energy but also provides a blueprint for sustainable development in urban areas.
