Hydraulic control valves are generally classified into two main types based on their structure: diaphragm type and piston type. Despite the structural differences, both operate on the same fundamental principle. The pressure difference, typically referred to as ΔP, serves as the driving force for the valve's operation. This pressure is managed by a pilot valve, which controls the hydraulic differential action of the diaphragm or piston, ensuring that the entire process is fully hydraulically operated.
The pilot valve regulates the pressure in the control chamber above the diaphragm or piston. When the pressure in this chamber is released to the atmosphere or to a low-pressure downstream area, the pressure below the main valve disc becomes greater than the pressure above it. This imbalance pushes the main valve disc open, allowing full flow through the system.
Conversely, if the pressure in the control chamber cannot be released, the pressure above the diaphragm or piston becomes higher than the pressure below. This causes the main valve disc to be forced closed, restricting or stopping the flow entirely.
In a regulated state, the pressure in the control chamber falls between the inlet and outlet pressures. This allows the main valve disc to remain partially open, with the exact position determined by the needle valve within the pilot system. The adjustable pilot valve can respond to changes in downstream pressure, opening or closing its small valve port accordingly. This adjustment alters the pressure in the control chamber, thereby controlling the position of the main valve disc.
