In the spring season, home renovation is in full swing, and a variety of building materials are competing to capture attention. Recently, a reporter visited several building material markets in Hefei and conducted random interviews with dealers and homeowners planning renovations. A surprising trend emerged: natural stone, commonly used in engineering projects, is not as popular in residential home improvement.
"I still prefer ceramic tiles for the living room and dining room floors. Marble or quartz stone is too expensive, and I don't see why anyone would choose it over tiles," said Mr. Liu, who is preparing to renovate his new home.
Su Xiaojun, a sales representative at the East China International Building Materials Center in Hefei, noted that the use of stone in home decoration is limited. Only certain areas like countertops, window sills, and kitchen backsplashes are often made from quartz or marble. In the past, stone was more widely used, but over time, misunderstandings about natural stone's radiation levels and the higher cost of artificial stones led to a decline in their popularity for home use. Now, most walls, floors, and bathrooms are still covered with ceramic tiles.
Fang Zhihua, vice president of the Hefei Stone Chamber of Commerce, explained that many people believe stone is too costly for home use. However, this perception isn’t entirely accurate. In mid-range renovations, choosing stone can actually be more cost-effective than ceramic tiles. For example, a standard 80 cm by 80 cm floor tile made of ordinary marble costs between 200 to 300 yuan, while high-end brands may charge up to 1,000 yuan per piece. On the other hand, quartz tiles can be produced in bulk at a cost of around 400 yuan per piece.
Quartz tiles offer numerous advantages for flooring and wall applications. They are easy to carve, shape, and can even be refinished after years of use. Despite these benefits, they remain less popular in residential settings due to misconceptions and price perceptions. As the market evolves, there’s potential for greater awareness and acceptance of stone in home decor.
