The zinc level in the water was 10 times higher than the national standard, and lead levels were an alarming 81 times above the limit. This poses serious health risks to consumers. The recent exposure of toxic faucets has caught the attention of many. A reporter visited the Wenzhou building materials market and found that although some brands claim to be "lead-free," most sellers are unaware of the potential risks. Many only mention copper as the material, without knowing if it contains lead.
**The cheaper the faucet price, the higher the lead content**
According to local quality supervision and industrial and commercial departments, the last faucet quality inspection in Wenzhou was conducted years ago, making current data unreliable.

On April 1, the reporter visited the Wenzhou Hardware Market and found that many merchants selling sanitary products were unaware of the potential lead risk in faucets. “How can copper be poisonous? It’s even impossible to have lead,†one seller said.
However, the reporter learned that high-quality faucets are often made from copper, which may contain impurities. Over time, these impurities can leach into the water, especially with stagnant "overnight water" in pipes, which tends to have higher heavy metal content, including lead.
“A lead-free faucet would be made of stainless steel, though it's more expensive,†said a salesperson from the Sanchuang brand. He showed a packaged faucet with a “Lead-Free†label on the box. “This is the lead-free model — it’s actually stainless steel. If you want copper without lead, it’s not possible. I can guarantee you won’t find any in Wenzhou.â€
When asked if the copper faucets they sold met the national standards, the salesperson first laughed and then suggested, “If you care about this, buy a copper faucet for the bathroom. Use it for washing your face, and don’t put it in the kitchen for dishwashing. That way, you avoid the lead.â€
