In a recent update, the AQSIQ (General Administration of Customs of China) revealed details about unsatisfactory imported food and cosmetics in March 2014. According to the report, a total of 183 batches of unqualified food products and six batches of cosmetics were detected by national entry-exit inspection and quarantine authorities.
Among the notable cases was Yonghe Soymilk, which was found to contain genetically modified components. The product, imported by Yonghe International Development Co., Ltd., weighed 360 kg and was returned. Additionally, COFCO I faced issues with Ngwangji, as it was discovered that the company had illegally used chemicals. As a result, 840 kg of lollipops were destroyed.
The unqualified food items involved 18 different product types, with cakes, biscuits, cereals, and aquatic products being the most common. These products came from 27 different countries or regions. The primary reasons for non-compliance included missing certificates, microbial contamination, and quality issues.
Notably, six batches of infant formula milk from Australia were also found to be non-compliant. Fujian Port International Trading Co., Ltd. imported 5,400 kg of Star Fortune Formula 3 and 5,400 kg of Star Fortune Formula 1, both of which had selenium levels that did not meet national standards. Another 7,198.2 kg of Star Fortune infant formula 2 contained excessive copper levels. Furthermore, 36 kg each of OZ Milko baby and toddler formula and infant formula, imported by Wuxi Kangguan Import and Export Trade Co., Ltd., lacked the necessary documentation. Additionally, 57.6 kg of OZ Milko infant formula had nutrient content that failed to meet required standards.
Another significant case involved five batches of French Carrefour brand foods imported by Shanghai Changqi Luzhong International Trade Co., Ltd. These products, including cheese dumplings, wheat cakes, pizza dough, caramel rice cakes, and caramel raisin cakes, were all destroyed due to exceeding their shelf life. They were manufactured by various companies, such as ST JEAN’s Carrefour, COMPTOIRE DU CAVIAR, EURODOUGH SAS, LADHUIE DISTRIBUTION, and Lactalis.
Regarding cosmetics, the unqualified products included skin care items and other cosmetic goods from four different countries. The main issues were restricted substances, mismatched goods, and microbial contamination. For instance, a batch of Belgian Chanel nail polish was destroyed after benzene was detected. A sample of American facial serum imported by Mary Kay (China) Cosmetics Co., Ltd. was also destroyed due to an excessive number of bacterial colonies.
It is reported that the relevant authorities have taken appropriate actions, such as returning the goods or destroying them, ensuring that these unqualified products did not enter the domestic market. This highlights the ongoing efforts of Chinese customs to maintain high safety and quality standards for imported goods.
