Macchina Volantis plans to build a flying car that can take off and land vertically

Bored of the urban commute congestion, StephenFries simply set up a startup called MacchinaVolantis in Australia, hoping to create a flying car with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) and a cruising range. As a five-seat model (model), it is equipped with a diesel range extender that supports switching between flight and road modes to achieve three times the travel efficiency of the past.

Although many people had the same idea as Stephen Fries, he did not intend to let others implement it. He believes that with the help of existing technology and mature experience, this dual-purpose vehicle can be quickly designed.

Earlier, we had heard about Vahana from Airbus, and flying car projects like Lilium and Joby. However, Fries plans to build a larger five-seat model, and each passenger can carry 25 kg of luggage.

In road mode, the performance of this "tricycle" is relatively limited. Driven by the front 70kW (93hp) steerable single drive wheels, the maximum speed is only 60km / h (37mph).

Since this vehicle is designed to fly in the air, this can be less of a concern. In road mode, it is still relatively compact and can be easily parked in the garage (only one parking space is required).

When taking off, its top wing will extend from the outer shell, and the bottom wing will fold down. Then, driven by 12 sets of electric motors (60kw / 80hp), the fuselage of 1.65 tons (3638 pounds) was sent vertically into the air.

When flying in the air, the duct fan will tilt forward, and the fuselage will become an efficient wing flying mode with a speed of about 65 knots. The wing fan will be folded behind the cover.

The 100L (26.4 gallon) fuel tank provides energy for the extended range diesel generator, with a maximum cruising speed of 150 knots (278km / h or 173mph) and a cruising range of more than 1,000 miles (1600km).

In addition to 12 redundant motors, the flying car is also equipped with a ballistic parachute for emergency landing. Like consumer drones, the takeoff and landing process is highly automated. The user can easily set the flight path and then automatically drive to the destination.

Although in a short time, we can not see the mass production of the real machine. But Fries claims that he has experience leading large projects, and the future is expected.
