This was the first time that Saudi Arabian copper concentrate had been imported through Lianyungang, with the cargo weighing approximately 7,510,880 tons. The arrival of this shipment marks a major milestone for the port, as it has now expanded its sources of copper concentrate to 30 countries and regions, reflecting a growing diversification in its import channels.
According to recent data, the majority of copper concentrates arriving at Lianyungang have traditionally come from South American countries such as Chile, Canada, Mexico, and Peru, with these regions accounting for roughly 70% of the total imports. However, to reduce over-reliance on a limited number of suppliers, Chinese companies have been actively seeking new sources overseas. Over the years, Lianyungang has become a key hub in this effort.
In 2010, the port received copper concentrate from 14 different countries. By 2011, that number jumped to 22, and by 2012, it reached 25. More recently, the import routes have spread beyond the Americas to include Asia (such as the Philippines and Malaysia), Africa (like South Africa and Mozambique), and Oceania (including Australia). This shift highlights the successful expansion of Lianyungang's supply chain and its role in supporting China's growing demand for raw materials.
