Recently, a massive vessel known as the "King of the Atlantic" arrived at Lianyungang Port, carrying a significant shipment of copper concentrate from Saudi Arabia. This was the first time that Saudi Arabian copper concentrate had been imported through this major Chinese port. The cargo weighed approximately 7,510,880 tons, marking a milestone in the diversification of Lianyungang's import sources.
By the end of the year, the number of countries and regions supplying copper concentrate to Lianyungang has reached 30, showing a clear shift towards more balanced and diversified supply chains. Historically, the majority of copper concentrate imports into the port came from countries in the Americas, such as Chile, Canada, Mexico, and Peru, with these regions accounting for around 70% of total imports. However, to reduce over-reliance on these markets, Chinese companies have been actively expanding their global mineral exploration efforts and seeking new trade routes.
Lianyungang serves as a prime example of this strategy. In 2010, only 14 countries supplied copper concentrate to the port. By 2011, that number jumped to 22, and by 2012, it had risen to 25. Over time, the sources have expanded beyond the Americas, reaching Asia (including the Philippines and Malaysia), Africa (such as South Africa and Mozambique), and even Australia and Oceania. This trend highlights a growing effort to ensure stable and secure access to critical raw materials in an increasingly complex global market.
