As a consumer, the reporter entered a store specializing in protective gear and inquired about available masks. The shopkeeper introduced two types: dust-proof and anti-virus masks. She then pointed to several masks on the shelf, explaining that prices ranged from over 2 yuan to more than 30 yuan, with varying levels of protection and origins.
She then handed over a mask labeled as a "Self-Priming Filter-Type Particle Respirator." The packaging indicated it was produced in Tangshan City, but only had the word "dust-proof" written on it, with no other markings. When the reporter asked to examine the respirator, the female shopkeeper, upon learning that the reporter intended to purchase in bulk, offered a "3M" brand mask. She provided a product labeled "SM281," claiming it looked good and was superior in material to others. The reporter purchased the mask for 15 yuan.
The reporter also observed a row of helmets on the shelf. The shopkeeper explained that hard hats ranged in price from 5 to 6 yuan for basic plastic models, often worn by regular workers, while more expensive glass or steel versions were used by supervisors. The cost of protective equipment varied significantly, reflecting differences in quality and usage.
It was noted that well-known brands like 3M and Honeywell were popular in the market, but counterfeit products were widespread due to various factors such as price. When the reporter inquired about better-quality items, the shopkeeper enthusiastically displayed a 3M dust mask, offering it at 20 yuan per unit if there were large tax-free orders. However, upon closer inspection, the packaging contained unclear text in English, Chinese, and Korean, raising doubts about its authenticity.
When the reporter expressed interest in purchasing, the shopkeeper hesitated and admitted that the 3M product was likely fake, noting that genuine ones could cost over 30 yuan. She suggested that the Tangshan-made masks were more affordable, typically priced between 2 to 3 yuan, and were commonly used by companies for their workers. Despite this, she claimed that the fake 3M masks appeared high-quality and had better sealing properties.
The shopkeeper also revealed that the low-cost 5- to 6-yuan helmets were made of plastic and used by construction workers, which she described as dangerous. She acknowledged that many companies did not provide proper safety equipment, leaving workers unaware of the risks. Regarding the sale of counterfeit goods, she admitted it was common, stating that cheaper fakes were often bought because they were more profitable.

One worker mentioned using ropes to secure themselves, but others relied on experience rather than safety procedures.
At auto repair shops near Xianfu Street, the reporter noticed painters wearing gas masks in enclosed spaces, while other workers moved freely without any protection. When asked about mask replacement, one worker said they would change the filter when it became uncomfortable or smelled bad.
