The concept of "teaching material" was first introduced by people from Taiwan and Hong Kong. These techniques were developed earlier than what we currently use. When they came to teach us how to raise pigs, this phase was referred to as "teaching material." However, the term itself is quite vague—what exactly is a teaching material? It refers to the process where piglets are trained to eat from a trough. After they learn to eat from the trough, there's a pre-conservation period, typically around four to six weeks of age, followed by the next stage, which is six to eight weeks old. This division is based on Zhou Ling’s research.
I haven’t seen any feeding activities happening on the farm yet. Once the piglets stop nursing, this stage is called the trough period, and generally, the teaching material is introduced when the piglets are around six weeks old. The main goal of this stage is to help piglets develop intestinal adaptability, smoothly transition from liquid to solid feed, and build their ability to handle weaning.
Currently designed teaching materials do not fully meet the nutritional needs of piglets during weaning. As a result, some issues may arise—such as poor appetite and increased susceptibility to illness. In the Chinese market, many piglet diets contain over 20% high-quality whey powder, which is already very costly. Chinese farmers can't afford such expensive feed, and even if they could, adding 20% skimmed milk powder makes it even more wasteful. High-cost teaching materials often lead to unnecessary expenses without real benefits.
So, what is the best teaching material? This is also a key focus area for Billy American and represents the future direction of teaching materials. The future lies in developing feed that closely mimics the mother’s milk, supporting the piglets’ growth and health more effectively.
