Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a uniform multi-walled carbon nanotube-based fire retardant coating that reduces the flammability of commonly used foam interiors. The combustibility of the carbon nanotube coated polyurethane foam was reduced by 35% compared to the untreated foam.

The researchers uniformly distributed and attached the modified carbon nanotubes to the upper and lower surfaces of the polymer layer. The resulting coating takes full advantage of the rapid heat dissipation of the carbon nanotubes and achieves greater ignition and combustion resistance than the brominated flame retardants commonly used for soft decoration. At the same time, when the nanotube coated foam is exposed to extreme high temperatures, a "carbon protective layer" barrier is created to prevent melt pool formation.
