"Smart Window" material is available to selectively block light and heat

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin are working to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, developing "smart window" technology that allows light to pass through while blocking heat, and vice versa. Researchers have developed "smart" glass coatings that block visible light, near-infrared light (NIR), or both. By embedding antimony indium tin oxide (ITO) nanocrystals in the glass, the team created a new electrochromic material that can transmit or block light depending on the applied potential. Among them, the light mode that allows light to pass while preventing heat transfer is the cold mode of the electrochromic material. Conversely, the light blocking while allowing heat transfer is the thermal mode.

This electrochromic material can control up to 90% of near-infrared light and 80% of visible light. Moreover, because the switching between modes takes only a few minutes, not hours, the commercialization of this technology is almost at your fingertips.

In order to put this new electrochromic material into practical use, researchers have used this material to construct a single, porous interpenetrating network. This design provides changes in electrons and ions that selectively block light and/or heat by applying different voltages. Researchers are now trying to study the low-cost manufacturing methods for this material.
