On January 3, when the customer was found missing, Dong Sai immediately started rushing to various places such as customers' homes, police stations, and local village committees in an effort to recover over 2 million yuan in payments. Before leaving, he called Hongyun Furniture Factory in Lecong Nancun Industrial Zone, Jinxin Furniture Factory in Lecong Lijiao, and Ocean Hardware Factory one by one, but all calls went unanswered, which left him frustrated and anxious. "They are all related," he said. "The owners of Ocean Hardware are Feng Zhiguo and Wei Qiong; Feng Zhiguo's sister Feng Lihua and her husband Zhang Xiaolong run Hongyun Furniture; and Wei Qiong's younger brother Wei Bo owns Jinxin Furniture." Without any response from the phone calls, Dong Sai quickly headed to Lecong, only to find out that the three factory owners had already disappeared.
He felt a bit relieved when he heard that the police had filed a case for suspected fraud. However, the news that the three customers were unreachable made him uneasy, so he rushed from Dali to Lecong. Upon arrival, he discovered that the three business owners had fled together during the New Year holiday.
Dong Sai had been doing business with these three factories since October 2011. Initially, their orders were small, and they paid cash after each delivery. Over time, the order volume increased, and payment was delayed until the end of the month. By October 2012, all three companies suddenly claimed to have received large orders and promised to settle the debts at the end of the year. Dong Sai believed them, but by then, the three companies owed him more than 2 million yuan.
According to suppliers of furniture materials, the three companies, including those supplying aluminum parts, collectively owed various suppliers a total of 17 million yuan in unpaid bills.
Fortune Furniture Factory, one of the companies involved, had its doors shut and the rolling gate welded shut with a ground screw. A nearby fast food restaurant owner told reporters, "It's been closed for almost a month."
Jinxin Furniture Factory, located in Lecong, was also shut down, with a security guard stationed at the entrance. The village committee had informed all suppliers who were in debt to attend a meeting. However, some suppliers who attended the meeting reported that the village committee could not provide a real solution to the problem.
