For nitrogen sources, ammonium bicarbonate is an excellent choice because it belongs to the ammonium-type nitrogen fertilizer. Once applied to the soil, it can be directly taken up by plant roots without needing further conversion. This makes it more effective than urea, which is an amide-type nitrogen fertilizer and requires microbial action to convert into a usable form. In cold weather, this conversion process slows down, reducing its effectiveness.
When it comes to phosphate fertilizers, superphosphate is preferred due to its high solubility. It contains 14% to 20% of water-soluble phosphorus pentoxide, with 80% to 95% of it being readily available for plant uptake. Compared to other phosphate fertilizers like calcium magnesium phosphate, superphosphate acts faster and is more suitable for winter use.
For potassium, potassium chloride is commonly used. However, for crops sensitive to chlorine such as potatoes and tomatoes, it's better to switch to potassium sulfate during the middle and late growth stages to avoid potential damage.
Compound fertilizers can also be used, with a 45% ternary compound fertilizer being a good option. Additionally, well-decomposed farmyard manure can provide slow-release nutrients while improving soil structure and fertility.
By selecting the right types of fertilizers based on their solubility and availability, farmers can ensure that crops receive essential nutrients efficiently even in cold weather, supporting healthy growth throughout the winter season.
