CAPP is a crucial software tool for craftsmen, as it allows the storage of process-related data and provides access to the "Basic Parts List of Process" for a specific product. This enables users to view all part information at a glance, streamlining workflow and improving efficiency.
The parts list we typically use is created in Excel, but there's a compatibility issue between Excel and CAPP. Extracting information from Excel into the CAPP basic parts list quickly, accurately, and efficiently has long been a challenge.
**Traditional Method**
Previously, when extracting basic information from the parts list and inputting it into CAPP, each part required five separate copy-paste operations—covering fields like number, name, material, quantity, and remarks. Since products often consist of multiple sets with numerous components, this repetitive task could take hours. With large volumes of parts, the process was not only time-consuming but also error-prone, as fatigue and inattention could lead to mistakes.
**Analyze the Problem**
To address this issue, we thoroughly analyzed the similarities and differences between the standard parts list in Excel and the CAPP process parts list. We discovered that by using Word as an intermediate format and making minor adjustments, all parts could be imported into CAPP in one go, eliminating errors caused by manual copying.
For example, our factory’s “Parts List†(see Figure 2) includes columns such as figure number, name, material, quantity, unit net weight, castings, forgings, unit, and remarks. On the other hand, the CAPP "Basic Parts List" contains 17 columns, including figure number, version, name, material, quantity, blank, process information, contractor, and remarks. While some data aligns, others like version, blank, and process information are missing in the Excel list and must be manually entered later.
**Solve the Problem**
By identifying the commonalities between the two tables, we developed a solution to bridge the gaps. The approach involves copying the Excel parts list into Word, removing unnecessary columns, and reorganizing the table structure to match the CAPP format exactly. Once aligned, the entire list can be pasted directly into CAPP in one operation, significantly reducing both time and error rates.
For instance, after copying the Excel table into Word, we deleted the "Parts List and Drawing Number" line and removed the "Unit Net Weight" column. Then, we inserted additional columns on the left side of the "Name" and "Contractor" fields to match the CAPP layout. After these adjustments, the Word table matched the CAPP template perfectly, allowing all data to be imported in a single step.
If a product has many parts, it’s recommended to insert any character on the next line before pasting, so CAPP can automatically adjust the page layout without issues.
This new method has been widely adopted by all craftsmen, achieving 100% accuracy in data entry. What used to take over half a month can now be completed in just a few hours, greatly improving both the quality and efficiency of the work.
